The AI buildout is not one balance sheet. Cash can accumulate at one company while another keeps raising capital alongside large equipment purchases. Even a supplier with substantial operating cash may issue debt while returning capital to shareholders.

Our reading of four recent quarterly disclosures is that cash generation, funding requirements and capital allocation must be analyzed separately. The opportunity for finance is to connect them on terms that support useful deployment—not to assume that strong cash somewhere in the chain finances every project elsewhere.

1. A cash-position map, not a league table

This comparison uses four selected companies' latest reported quarters, not an industry-wide sample. Amounts are USD billions; the dates deliberately remain visible.

Company and quarter end Operating cash flow Asset-purchase cash outflow* Difference**
Broadcom · Aug. 2, 2026 14.197 0.532 +13.665
NVIDIA · July 26, 2026 24.077 2.677 +21.400
CoreWeave · June 30, 2026 0.679 6.422 −5.743
Nebius · June 30, 2026 2.2461 5.6574 −3.4113

Cash asset purchases are the specified investing-section purchase lines: Broadcom PP&E; NVIDIA and Nebius PP&E plus intangible assets; CoreWeave PP&E including capitalized internal-use software. They are not identical asset baskets. Nebius's operating figure is for continuing operations; discontinued-operation operating cash flow is zero in the H1 and Q1 2026 statements used here.

Difference means operating cash flow minus the positive outflow amount shown. It is not a standardized free-cash-flow or distributable-cash measure. For example, NVIDIA also deducts $59 million of asset principal payments, recorded in financing activities, in its company-defined FCF of $21.341 billion.

These are corporate cash flows, not separately measured AI cash flows. Broadcom includes infrastructure software; Nebius includes other businesses. Different quarter ends, business mixes and asset ownership make this a map of financial positions, not a ranking of business quality or returns.

The distinction matters. Cash paid for an accelerator may be investing cash outflow for its buyer and operating cash receipt for its seller. Adding company operating cash flows without considering those classifications and internal transfers is not a measure of the industry's external funding or its return on AI investment.

2. Operating cash can contain customer financing

CoreWeave's second-quarter indirect cash-flow statement includes a $790 million positive deferred-revenue adjustment, larger than its $679 million total operating cash inflow. Subtracting that line mechanically leaves −$111 million. That is a decomposition, not an estimate of cash flow in a world without customer prepayments. The adjustment is not gross cash received from customers, and other working-capital movements also matter. CoreWeave Q2 cash-flow statement

For Nebius, the second-quarter deferred-revenue cash-flow adjustment is $1.197 billion, derived from $4.395 billion for the first half minus $3.198 billion for the first quarter. This working-capital adjustment excludes acquisition effects; it is not a simple balance-sheet movement or a gross advance-receipts disclosure. Nebius H1 statements · Q1 statements

Customer cash can be useful financing even when accounting places it in operating activities. It also comes with performance obligations. A cash balance does not tell us how much future service has already been paid for, what it will cost to deliver, or how much future billing will remain after advance credits.

The question is therefore not simply whether operating cash is positive. It is which cash flows can recur without new financing-like customer advances, and what obligations accompany the cash already received. That requires a contract-and-cash bridge, not a renamed accounting subtotal.

3. Cash-rich suppliers still choose financing

NVIDIA reported $24.896 billion of debt-issuance cash proceeds, net of costs, in the same quarter that it paid $25.779 billion in repurchases and dividends. Strong operating cash did not mean an absence of borrowing. Broadcom, by contrast, reported $5.628 billion in debt repayments and $3.103 billion in dividends in its latest quarter. Those are simultaneous cash-flow observations, not evidence that a particular debt dollar funded a particular payout. Cash is fungible. Net financing cash flow also includes more than borrowing and repayment, so a net outflow cannot be read as “no external financing.”

For the rest of the AI system, the distinction is decisive: a company's capacity to supply capital is not a commitment to do so. Cash can support shareholders, repay liabilities, acquire assets, purchase securities, or fund another operating business. Each choice has different liquidity, balance-sheet and risk consequences.

4. The crossings are already real—but trace them separately

There are documented supplier-to-operator investments. CoreWeave identifies NVIDIA as the investor in its January 2026 $2 billion gross common-stock placement. Nebius identifies NVIDIA in its March 2026 pre-funded-warrant transaction, and reports $2 billion of warrant proceeds in Q1. These calendar-first-quarter transactions fall outside the quarters shown above and should not be added to those cash-flow figures. CoreWeave Q2 10-Q, Equity Financing · Nebius Q1 statements

This establishes that vendor capital can cross into compute operators. It does not trace the subsequent use of every dollar or establish that all financed deployments earn adequate returns. An equity investment, customer advance, equipment loan and guarantee can support the same construction program while imposing different repayment, service and risk-bearing obligations.

A useful transaction-level test has three parts:

  1. What gap is being funded? Procurement, commissioning, customer collections or a persistent operating shortfall require different instruments and maturities.
  2. What does the capital provider receive? Interest, equity upside, discounted compute, priority delivery and a guarantee are not interchangeable compensation.
  3. What real outcome improves? Earlier productive capacity, more reliable delivery or lower execution cost is stronger evidence than a larger financing headline alone.

5. What to measure next

We would track operating cash together with the specific working-capital movements that produced it; cash asset purchases separately from non-cash additions and future commitments; and debt issuance, repayment and equity proceeds separately from net financing cash flow. Restricted and unrestricted cash should remain distinct.

Then connect those company-level records to actual contract payment dates and deployment outcomes. The cash statements can locate a funding requirement, but they cannot by themselves establish a project's lifetime return or the productive value of vendor support.

Finance can accelerate AI by matching credible funding needs with suitable capital. Cash abundance at one node is the starting point for that work, not its completion.
